Quiz Mate Privacy Policy
Last updated: 27 July 2026 · Applies to the Quiz Mate Chrome extension (bring-your-own-key release)
Quiz Mate is a local-first browser extension. This document describes exactly what it accesses, stores, and transmits.
What page information Quiz Mate accesses
- Quiz Mate reads the visible text of the active tab only when you click "Scan Current Question" (or re-scan). There is no background or automatic scanning.
- The scan looks for a question and 2–6 answer options (radio buttons, labels, buttons, lists). It ignores hidden elements, navigation, headers/footers, scripts, styles, and any form that contains a password field. For embedded quiz widgets it also reads the quiz questions from the widget's fallback markup on the same page.
- After you scan, Quiz Mate passively listens to the progress messages the quiz widget already sends to its own page (question shown / question answered) so the side panel can follow along and unlock explanations. Only the question title is read from those messages; it never leaves your browser and is not sent to the AI provider. This listening stops when the tab is closed or reloaded.
- The full page HTML is never stored and never transmitted anywhere.
- Quiz Mate never reads cookies, passwords, or browsing history, and never modifies, clicks, or submits anything on the page.
What is sent to Anthropic
When you request a Hint, 50% Off, Right Answer, or Explanation — including explanations
triggered by the opt-in auto-explain feature — Quiz Mate sends
only the question text and answer options shown in the side panel
(plus Quiz Mate's own instructions) to the Anthropic API (api.anthropic.com),
authenticated with your own API key. Nothing is sent to any other party.
Anthropic's handling of that data is governed by
Anthropic's privacy policy.
Your API key
- You supply your own Anthropic API key ("bring your own key").
-
It is stored in
chrome.storage.localon this device only. It is never synced, never logged, never included in error messages or diagnostics, and sent only to Anthropic. - Honest limitation: Chrome extension local storage is not an operating-system-grade secret vault. Software running with your user account could potentially read it. Use a key with a spending limit, and delete it from Quiz Mate settings when you no longer need it.
- There is no Quiz Mate backend in this release — your key cannot be sent to us because there is no "us" to send it to.
What Quiz Mate stores locally
| Data | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your Anthropic API key | chrome.storage.local |
To call the API on your behalf |
| Your preferences (model, default allowances, auto-explain) | chrome.storage.local |
Convenience |
| The active quiz session (allowances, usage counters, start time, quiz-site domain, tab id) | chrome.storage.local |
So closing the side panel doesn't reset your allowances |
Questions and AI answers are not retained — they exist only in the side panel while you look at them. Ended sessions are deleted, not archived.
What Quiz Mate does not do
- No analytics or telemetry of any kind.
- No advertising.
- No user accounts.
- No developer-operated servers processing your data.
- No question or answer history by default.
- No remote code — everything executable ships inside the extension package.
Deleting your data
Quiz Mate settings → Your data lets you delete the API key, session data, preferences, or all local Quiz Mate data with one click. Uninstalling the extension also removes all of its local storage.
